Where the Standard Comes From

Medically informed remediation. Not medical treatment.

NORMI publishes a Level 4 Protocol for environmentally sensitized clients. It asks for more than a standard cleanup: tighter containment, more detailed cleaning, and documented verification. Our process is aligned with NORMI Level 4 / NCRSI-style principles and designed for clients who need more than standard mold removal.

Why Sensitized Clients Need More

Standard remediation often stops at what you can see.

Standard remediation often focuses on visible growth or obvious water damage. Sensitized clients may need a more detailed approach: hidden reservoirs, particulate load, mVOCs, HVAC/air movement, contents, cross-contamination, cleaning precision, and PRV (post-remediation verification).

The Protocol

Eight stages. Documented at every one.

Every health-centered job runs the same sequence. Scope first, moisture second, then containment, removal and cleaning, then verification and a plan for keeping the building where we left it.

    Assessment and scope review

    We start from your licensed assessor's report and remediation plan, or help you arrange an independent NYS-licensed assessor. The scope is then agreed in writing before anyone opens a wall.

  2. 02

    Moisture-source identification

    We find the leak, the humidity problem or the ventilation fault, and we say what has to be fixed. Remediation without moisture control does not hold.

  3. 03

    Containment and cross-contamination control

    Poly barriers with zippered entries, HEPA-filtered negative air and sealed HVAC registers keep the work area shut off. After removal, whole-home VaPURE™ vapor treatment is our cross-contamination stage, reaching surfaces, void spaces and the air across the property.

  4. 04

    Removal, cleaning and decontamination

    Water-damaged porous materials come out, double-bagged and sealed. Framing and non-porous surfaces are HEPA-vacuumed, damp-wiped and cleaned, with wire-brushing or sanding of structural wood where the job calls for it.

  5. 05

    Air and surface cleaning strategy

    HEPA air scrubbers run throughout the work. Surfaces are cleaned in a set order so finished rooms do not get re-seeded by the rooms still in progress.

  6. 06

    HVAC and contents

    Ductwork and HVAC are assessed and cleaned where they are part of the problem. Contents are cleaned where they can be, and we tell you plainly where they cannot.

  7. 07

    Post-remediation verification

    Third-party lab air and surface sampling, plus the NYS assessor's clearance where the law requires it. The criteria are set before we start, not after.

  8. 08

    Long-term air quality and prevention

    Indoor humidity between 35% and 50%, working ventilation, clean ducts, and periodic checks of basements, crawl spaces and attics. You leave with a written prevention plan.

A sensitized client cannot audit a job by looking at it. So we write down what we found, what we planned, what we did and how we checked it.

The paperwork is the job.

NORMI's Level 4 material asks for assessment reports, a remediation protocol, a work plan, containment and PPE, moisture-source correction, post-remediation verification criteria and site-specific documentation. That list is our file for your project.

Working alongside your care team

We work on the building.

We can coordinate with licensed mold assessors, physicians and other professionals when that is useful. The NORMI and George Washington University material both make the same point: a person can be under medical care for a mold-related illness while still living in the building driving the exposure. The building is our part of that problem.

Scope and detail. A standard job targets visible growth and obvious water damage. A health-centered job also accounts for hidden reservoirs, particulate load, HVAC and air movement, contents and cross-contamination, with tighter containment, more detailed cleaning and documented verification.

Yes, when it helps. New York law requires a licensed mold assessor to write the assessment and remediation plan on projects over 10 square feet, and a separately licensed contractor to carry out the work. Send us the plan and we quote against it. We can also talk to your physician about what the building work will and will not address.

Third-party lab air and surface sampling against criteria agreed before we start, plus the New York State assessor's clearance where the law requires it. You get a written before-and-after report.
